How Ignition Timing Works?

Ignition timing is a critical operation that affects engine performance significantly. Given this, it stands to reason that there would be ways to manipulate the ignition timing process to improve vehicle performance. The most effective approach to improve engine performance is to advance or retard ignition timing.

The following steps occur during the process:
  • During the compression stroke, the spark plug ignites.
  • In the combustion chamber, the air/fuel mixture is ignited.
  • When the burning gases expand, pressure builds up in the cylinder.
  • Pressure is maximum when the piston reaches top dead centre (TDC).
  • The piston is pushed down as hard as possible by pressure.
     
The exhaust stroke occurs after the ignition timing process to expel the old gases and allow the process to repeat again. The timing of the spark is critical for maintaining high engine performance.

The condition of the spark plugs, engine temperature, and intake pressure are all elements that might affect ignition timing in an engine. Engine modifications or improvements necessitate changes to the ignition timing settings.

Ignition Retardation and Ignition Advancing 

Ignition timing is expressed in crankshaft rotations before top dead centre. Spark plugs must fire at the correct moment, which can be accomplished by advancing or retarding the engine’s timing.

The term “timing advance” refers to the spark plugs igniting sooner in the compression stroke, further away from TDC. The air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber does not immediately burn. Ignition timing may need to be advanced to enable time for everything to ignite.

The main advantage of advancing the timing of a vehicle’s ignition is that it increases the horsepower of an engine. Increasing the ignition timing improves high-end power while decreasing low-end power. It also aids in getting the spark through the ignition delay and running at maximum power.

When timing is delayed, the spark plug fires later in the compression stroke. Retarding ignition time has the effect of minimizing engine detonation, which is combustion inside the cylinders after the spark plug fires. This is also referred to as engine knocking.

When it comes to turbocharged or supercharged engines that are under tremendous pressure, delaying engine timing can be more useful. Retarding the timing on these engines compensates for denser air and fuel mixes, allowing them to run more effectively.

Low power: If the ignition timing is too late, the spark plug will ignite the mixture too late. This has the potential to lower the power of your engine.

Engine knocking: happens when the air-fuel mixture in the cylinder is ignited too quickly. The mixture then pushes up against pistons that are still attempting to compress it. The engine emits loud pinging sounds as a result of this.
 
Fuel economy is reduced because the timing of the spark plug is critical during the ignition process. When this occurs at the wrong time, the combustion process is disrupted. As a result, your engine consumes more gasoline to compensate for the loss of power.
 
Overheating occurs when the air-fuel mixture is ignited too early in the combustion process, causing the heat generated to increase. This can cause harm to various engine components.
